Abstract
Dislocation dynamics in a two-dimensional Lennard-Jones solid is studied using an interactive simulation environment with on-line visualization. Movement of a dislocation in a homogeneous system under the influence of external stress and strain rate has been investigated. The results indicate that the simple model is capturing some essential characteristics of real materials. Investigation of strain relief in lattice-mismatched layer structures indicates that dislocation nucleation is asymmetric with respect to the sign of misfit. Moreover, dislocation reactions are observed that enhance the strain relief process.
