Abstract

The investigation of muscles which differ in their physiological and metabolic characteristic has shown: Not only different fibre types, but also different muscle types adapt themselves differently to changed conditions. That means that the properties of a certain fibre type and its adaptability to changed conditions depend on the type of muscle from which the fibres arise. The effects of changed conditions to fibres from different muscles are presented in Chap. 5. Considering the influence of the muscle type on the properties of fibre types, the following effects may be pointed out: SO and FOG fibres of an oxidative muscle have twice higher cross section areas than SO and FOG fibres of a glycolytic muscle. This may be a means, additionally to the fibre population, to realize the higher oxidative activity of the oxidative muscle than that of the glycolytic muscle. The cross section areas of FG fibres are not much larger in glycolytic than in oxidative muscles.
