Abstract

What are the perspectives for studies of muscle fibre diversity? One point is the investigation of the molecular and functional diversity of human muscle fibres as well as their adaptability and their specific contribution to muscle performance. Reports on fibre diversity so far are predominantly concerned with muscles of animals, mainly of rats and rabbits. These studies revealed that fibre diversity is species-dependent. Recent studies (Bottinelli et al. 2000) suggest that fibre diversity and fibre adaptability in humans differ from that of animals.
