Lebertumoren werden in primär hepatische und sekundär metastatische Tumoren unterschieden.
Das hepatozelluläre Karzinom (HCC) als primärer Lebertumor ist global betrachtet das 7. häufigste Malignom und tritt in Europa mit 3–5 Todesfällen pro 100.000 Einwohner und Jahr in Erscheinung. Etwa 80 % aller HCC sind mit einer Leberzirrhose assoziiert (Caselman et al. 1999). Dabei ist für die Entstehung des HCC neben dem Stadium der Zirrhose auch die zugrundeliegende Erkrankung von Bedeutung. Ein deutlich erhöhtes Risiko findet sich bei viralen und alkoholtoxischen Genesen.
