Die Bildung von Metastasen ist ein entscheidender Schritt in der Entwicklung eines malignen Tumors, stellt häufig den Übergang von einer lokal begrenzten Erkrankung zu einem systemischen Prozess dar und führt somit im Allgemeinen zu einer Prognoseverschlechterung des Patienten.
