Sie sind zu unterscheiden von inkonstant vorkommenden Muskeln wie z. B. dem Palmaris longus oder dem Achselbogen von Langer in der Axilla (Daniels u. Deila Rovere 2000) oder dem M. abductor digiti minimi accessorius (Curry u. Kuz 2000) und anderen überzähligen Muskeln (Nogueira et al. 2000) (sog. Muskelvarietäten), die sich funktionell nicht bemerkbar machen, aber bei chirurgischen Interventionen von Bedeutung sein können.
