Abstract
Health-care-related infection, also known as hospital-acquired or nosocomial infections, are common, expensive to health services and increase patient morbidity and length of stay. The huge rise in day-case surgery and early discharge from hospital has not been associated with an increase in support and trained services within primary care. Surgical site (wound) infections (SSIs) and chronic wound infections have almost their entire cost transferred to primary health care, where there may often be inappropriate management
