Infektiöse Wirbelkörperdestruktionen konnten bereits bei ägyptischen Mumien nachgewiesen werden. Hier fand man ca. 1000 v. Chr. eine Mumie mit Zerstörung des XI. und X. Brustwirbels bei einem Psoasabszess.
