Zusammenfassung

Die eitrige oder septische Arthritis wird wegen ihrer anatomischen Nähe und ätiopathogenetischen Ähnlichkeit meist mit der Osteomyelitis zusammen abgehandelt. Sie stellt jedoch eine eigenständige Erkrankung dar. Als oft fulminant verlaufende Infektion des Gelenks ist die septische Arthritis ein echter orthopädisch/chirurgischer Notfall, nicht nur im Säuglings- und Kleinkindesalter. Durch inadäquate Behandlung kann es durch Destruktion des betroffenen Gelenks zu schwer wiegenden Folgezuständen kommen. Daher ist die frühestmögliche Diagnose mit der Konsequenz eines raschen therapeutischen Handelns essentiell, um das Risiko einer Defektheilung zu reduzieren.
