Abstract

The electrochemical oxidation of phenol for waste water treatment is studied on a PbO2 layer deposited on three different substrates (graphite, titanium oxide and tantalum) in electrochemical cells without separator. Concentrations of phenol and reaction intermediates (hydroquinone, benzoquinone and aliphatic acids) were assayed by liquid chromatography. When using the titanium oxide or the tantalum substrate, no carboxylic acid accumulation has been observed after the aromatic ring rupture. Among the three electrodes studied, PbO2 coated on a tantalum substrate gives the best performance for phenol degradation.
