Abstract
Low-input, non-irrigated agriculture with low yields is predominant in Mexico, with maize and bean as the basic crops. Land for agriculture is very often taken away from forest areas and deforestation rates in Latin-America (due also to timbering, fires and urban use of forest land) are among the highest in the world. 5.3 million forest hectares were lost from 1984 to 1992 in Mexico. It is estimated that at this rate of deforestation, no forests will exist in Mexico by the year 2035. For this reason, we decided to participate in a reforestation program in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment (Secretaría de Desarrollo Ambiental, Morelos).
