Summary

This paper addresses the issue of how to develop and implement strategies for firms which are in a hypercompetitive and turbulent environment. Referring to a military metaphor, hypercompetition in a turbulent environment is compared to a position war, with detrimental effects for all competitors. Incremental change does not work for breaking out from a position war and transforming it into a movement war. Leadership is needed. Leadership means discovering new opportunities and changing the rules of the game. Leadership, however, needs to be supplemented with a new approach which enables firms, operating in different industries, to share their core competencies and to form a co-evolving new system that learns its way into the future. The paper shows that co-evolution is a new way for both survival and value creation in a hypercompetitive and turbulent environment.
