Zusammenfassung

Die schlafbezogenen Atemstörungen (SBAS) werden eingeteilt in Störungen mit und ohne Obstruktion der oberen Atemwege (Peter et al. 1991). Hierbei imponieren bei den Störungen mit extrathorakaler Atemwegsobstruktion die obstruktive Schlafapnoe (kompletter Verschluß der extrathorakalen Atemwege) sowie das Schnarchen (partielle Obstruktion). Diese beiden klinischen Bilder finden sich bei der überwiegenden Mehrzahl der Patienten mit schlafbezogenen Atemstörungen und seit 2 Jahrzehnten ist insbesondere die obstruktive Schlafapnoe Gegenstand intensiver Forschungsarbeiten.
