Zusammenfassung

Direkt verbunden mit dem Aufstieg zur inzwischen zweitgrößten Wirtschaftsnation der Erde war Japans zunehmende Integration in die Weltwirtschaft. Schon 1971 wurde es zur drittgrößten Exportnation, drei Jahre später erreichte es die gleiche Position beim Warenimport. In den 80er Jahren bildete es die wichtigste Herkunftsregion aller weltweit getätigten Direktinvestitionen. Damit verbunden wurde Japan schließlich zum größten Kapitalexporteur der Erde, dessen Netto-Auslandsvermögen seit 1985 weltweit an erster Stelle steht. Mit dem Kapitalexport einher gingen hohe Handels-und Leistungsbilanzüberschüsse, die aus Sicht des Auslands spätestens seit Mitte der 80er Jahre die japanische Außenwirtschaft charakterisieren und zu starken handelspolitischen Spannungen geführt haben.
