Abstract
The intrusion of saltwater from a saltwater reservoir into a connected freshwater aquifer is a well-known problem not only on the seashore. Fig 11.1 shows the situation on the German North-Sea coast. It is a severe problem where coastal regions are highly populated, especially in the vicinity of big cities. The situation is worsened by increased pumping of groundwater for irrigation, drinking water or recreational purposes.
