Summary
The ventricular system of 22 formol-saline fixed cadaver brain hemispheres was investigated using four different approaches in a free hand endoscopy mode based on MRI reconstructions. MRI and 3 D endoscopy were used to perform 198 measurements of extra- and intraventricular distances. Comparison of 184 matched trajectories showed a mean deviation of MRI from 3 D endoscopy of -1 mm, but no correlation between length of measurements and deviation of the two methods could be found. Additionally we analysed the applicability of different 3 D endoscopes in neurosurgery. The advantages and disadvantages of the 3 D prototypes in comparison to common 2 D endoscopes are discussed. Suggestions of improvements to 3D endoscopes are made.
