Minimally Invasive Techniques for Neurosurgery

Summary

This report summarizes our clinical experiences with the neuronavigation system EasyGuide Neuro in a series of 62 cranial neurosurgical procedures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy, safety and the routine handling of this system in a wide range of cerebral operations performed from December 1995 to November 1996 in our department.

EasyGuide Neuro permits an exact preoperative planning and is an excellent tool for neurosurgical training. The dynamically displayed visualization of the individual anatomy around the lesion allows a virtual walk to the target area in order to determine the optimal surgical approach.

The navigation system was successfully used for exact trephination planning and for precise localization of the transsulcal or transfissural microsurgical approach to deep-seated lesions, as well as for guided biopsies and catheter insertions.
