Summary
Primary aqueductal stenosis is a rare cause of obstructive hydrocephalus. Etiology of this lesion remains unclear till today. Possible factors causing primary aqueductal stenosis such as genetic dis orders, infectious disease or vitamin shortage during pregnancy are described. A total of 22 patients with primary aqueductal stenosis are presented, 8 of whom are treated by CSF shunt placement and 14 with an endoscopic third ventriculostomy. The efficacy of third ventriculostomy compared to conventional CSF diversion techniques in treatment of chronic obstructive hydrocephalus is discussed.
