Gemessen an der Geschichte der Erkrankung, ist das vorhandene Wissen um die Ätiopathogenese der Spätfolgen des Diabetes mellitus gering. Die wesentlichen histologischen, biochemischen und biomechanischen Forschungsergebnisse wurden in den letzten 40 Jahren publiziert.
