Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC is extremely common in sub-Saharan Africa and the Far East. In high incidence areas it presents in young to middle-aged adults with an 8:1 male predominance, a relatively acute onset of symptoms, and a rapid clinical course. In contrast in the United States and Europe it is relatively uncommon and occurs predominantly in elderly individuals (2.5:1 male predominance). HCC frequently develops on the basis of alcohol-or hepatitis-related cirrhosis, which presents with an insidious onset of symptoms and a more protracted clinical course. In the following, imaging features concerning the morphology of HCC in unenhanced and contrast-enhanced MRI are presented. Special emphasis is placed on the differential diagnostic criteria versus other hepatic tumors.
