Die Megakaryozytopoese 8, 35, 41, 46, 88 erfolgt im Knochenmark. Alle Reifungsschritte bis hin zum Thrombozyten stehen unter dem Einfluß des wichtigsten physiologischen Stimulators, Thrombopoetin, eines 332 Aminosäuren umfassenden Moleküls, das in Leber und Knochenmark gebildet wird. Auch Zytokine (Interleukin 6 und 11) steigern die Megakaryozytopoese.
