Summary
Suppression of protein production has long been noted to occur in the brain following ischemia and reperfusion, and may be an important contributing factor in neuronal death [21]. It is now generally accepted that this depression of protein synthesis is due to inhibition of translation initiation. We will review data showing that phosphorylation of the eukaryotic initiation factor, eIF2, is a key event in the suppression of protein synthesis during reperfusion.
