Summary
The hollow atoms are (quasi) neutral atomic species having all their electrons in excited states while the innermost shells are empty. The technique to prepare hollow atoms is to ultimately strip given neutral atoms at low velocity and dress it, further, near or on a surface. By changing the experimental conditions one can prepare hollow atoms of very different configurations: below or at the surface capture occurs for Ar in the M and the N shells, and above it in high Rydberg states. By changing the surface target, conductor, semiconductor or insulator, we can study various phenomena. The way to study these ion-surface interactions can be Auger spectroscopy or x-ray spectroscopy. Finally, we will see that beyond their applications for the study of ion-surface interactions, the hollow atoms also constitute an interesting field of fundamental physics.
