Abstract

Human cytomegalovirus (hCMV) infects 70%–90% of adults (Wentworth and Alexander 1971). Evidence of CMV infection, but not other common viruses such as measles or influenza, has been found in the remote Tiriyo Indian tribe in Brazil, suggesting that CMV has been present in the human population for a long time (Gold and Nankervis 1976). hCMV infection usually occurs early in life with only mild and subclinical disease, followed by virus latency that can last for the lifetime of immunocompetent individuals. However, reactivation of the virus can occur in immuno-compromised patients, such as AIDS and transplant patients, and become a major cause of morbidity and mortality.
