Zusammenfassung
In vielen Teilen des Mittelmeerraumes führten Feuer sowie historische und rezente Übernutzung zu großen Verlusten des Oberbodens mit erheblichen nachteiligen Folgen für die Grundwassererneuerung, das regionale Klima und die Wirtschaft. Im EU-Projekt „Mediterranean Desertification and Landuse“ (MEDALUS, 1991–1994) wurde die überragende Bedeutung der Bodenverhältnisse für die Prozesse herausgearbeitet, die zu Degradation und Desertifikation führen und die als zwei „Teufelskreise“ mit negativen Rückkoppelungen beschrieben wurden (vgl. Williams et al. 1995)
