Zusammenfassung
Ziele der Diabetestherapie sind Symptomfreiheit, Vermeidung von Spätkomplikationen und Verminderung der Letalität. Dieses wird in der Regel durch eine möglichst optimale Blutzuckereinstellung erreicht. Grundlage jeder Diabetestherapie ist die Diätbehandlung des Patienten. Darüber hinaus müssen oft Antidiabetika angewendet werden. Die Gabe von Insulin ist beim Typ-I-Diabetes erforderlich sowie bei solchen Patienten vom Typ II, bei denen auch orale Antidiabetika keine befriedigende Einstellung des Stoffwechsels ergeben. Beim übergewichtigen Typ-IIb-Diabetes kann der Blutzucker häufig allein durch Diät und Normalisierung des Körpergewichts eingestellt werden. Erst bei unzureichendem Erfolg der diätetischen Maßnahmen ist die Gabe oraler Antidiabetika angezeigt.
