Elektrische Maschinen sind prinzipiell Energiewandler. Sie wandeln elektrische Energie (bzw. Arbeit oder Leistung) in mechanische um oder umgekehrt. Hierunter fallen alle Motoren und Generatoren beispielsweise vom kleinen Motor eines Kassettenrecorders bis zum großen Motor einer Elektrolokomotive oder vom schwachen Fahraddynamo bis zum Großgenerator in einem Kraftwerk.
