Abstract

Onychomycoses are disseminated worldwide with a prevalence of 2%–13% or even more in special groups of the population [1–6]. Fungal infections of the nail may occur at any age, but they are very rare in children. They are mainly observed in adults and the number of cases in elderly people is increasing rapidly [7]. Considering the relatively high prevalence and the steadily increasing incidence, onychomycosis should no longer be regarded as a merely cosmetic problem. Onychomycosis may be caused by a variety of fungal agents, including dermatophytes, yeasts and moulds. Infections tend to occur more often in patients with underlying diseases, such as circulatory disorders or diabetes.
