Chrom ist ein d-Übergangselement der Gruppe VIb des Periodensystems. Es hat die Ordnungszahl 24 und eine relative Atommasse von 51,996. Von seinen fünf Radioisotopen ist 51Cr mit einer Halbwertszeit von 27,8 Tagen das bei Versuchen am häufigsten eingesetzte.
