The Testicular Descent in Human

Part of the book series: Advances in Anatomy Embryology and Cell Biology ((ADVSANAT,volume 156))

Abstract

Testicular descent is divided into an inner and outer one (Hutson 1985) or into three stages: abdominal, canalicular, and scrotal descent (e.g. Heyns 1987; Sampaio and Favorito 1998). These classifications do not seem to be sufficiently detailed with respect to clinical (e.g. cryptorchidism) or experimental work (e.g. function of MIS or androgens). Therefore, we have divided testicular descent into five phases referring to significant processes mainly in the development of the gubernaculum and position of testes.
