Heat Shock Proteins in Atherosclerosis

  • Chapter
Stress Proteins

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 136))

Abstract

Atherosclerosis is a progressive pathological lesion of the arterial wall, arising as a consequence of chronic vascular injury. This review will briefly describe changes in heat shock protein (Hsp) distribution and expression levels that have been observed during atherosclerotic plaque evolution, then examine evidence that altered Hsp production and distribution within the arterial wall directly contributes to lesion formation and progression. Throughout the review, and in closing, some currently unanswered questions needing further investigation also will be outlined.
