Abstract

The three papers presented by J. R Estienne, H. Miyajima and S. Watanabe on the evolution of the corporate governance and financial discipline of firms provide interesting analyses of the behaviour and the control of the J-firm; these presentations allow to draw comparisons with alternative forms of organization and control in other market and transition economies where there is some doubt about the possibility of implementing a real and efficient outside control model. Finally, the papers raise some fundamental questions on the future of corporate governance of Japanese firms whose recent low performance may signal the end of the dynamic industrial organization in this country.
