Abstract

Studies of flow-induced deformation of isolated chains in solution [1] confirm the theoretical prediction of the coil-stretch transition in elongational flow [2]. Although there are still several unresolved issues related to the scaling of the critical strain rate with molecular weight [3,4], it is believed that the basic physics of the coil-stretch transition in a single polymer chain is well-understood.
