Tethered Polymer Chains under Strong Flows: Stems and Flowers

  • Chapter
Book cover Flexible Polymer Chains in Elongational Flow

Abstract

A long DNA molecule can be seen directly under an optical microscope if it is suitably treated with fluorescent dyes [1]. This allows one to see how a long flexible chain (N monomers) responds to external forces f. The conformation of the uniformly stretched chain has been discussed by Pincus [2]. Under a force f, acting on the two free ends, the chain configuration is modified only above a scale length ξ = kTlf. The chain (Fig. 3.1 a) can be pictured as a string of blobs of size ξ containing g monomers with ξ = g v a (v = 1/2 in θ solvent, v = 3/5 in good solvent). The end to end distance is.
