In the following description of Karl Schwarzschild’s life, his scientific work during the various phases of his career will be mentioned, but not discussed in detail. This will be done in the subsequent 10 sections. Schwarzschild’s papers are cited as double numbers inside square brackets [...]; the first number gives the section and the second the citation within that particular section. The same double numbers appear in the lists of contents on p. XI, 497 and 501.
