Abstract

Banathy’s generic architecture for design is modified into a model for idealized systems design. A community of fourth-generation designers is added to the model as a container for design activities. Some cultural characteristics of design communities are suggested. Added to design genesis are the activities of penetrating an anxiety barrier to “jump” conceptually outside of existing reality in order to allow dreaming and “heartstorming.” Suggestions are offered for facilitating these activities.
