Somatic Hybridization in Festuca and Lolium

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Biotechnology in Agriculture and Forestry ((AGRICULTURE,volume 27))

Abstract

Several species in the genus Festuca are commonly grown perennial forage and turf grasses of the temperate geographic region. Particularly tall fescue (F. arundinacea Schreb.) has a wide range of distribution as a forage crop, since it shows good persistence and tolerance to various environmental stresses. However, it is a cool-season grass of lower quality and palatability compared to the widely used ryegrasses (Lolium spp.). The genus Lolium includes two key temperate grass species: the annual Italian ryegrass (L. multiflorum Lam.) and the perennial ryegrass (L. perenne L.).
