Abstract
At present, over 12 000 species of ferns (Pteridophytes) belonging to at least 400 genera are known (Crabble et al. 1975). They grow throughout an extraordinary range of habitats from high-altitude and high-latitude Arctic-Alpine to the heart of tropical rainforests, as well as from subdesert scrub of continental interiors to rocks of the sea coast and mangrove swamps. Some of them prefer shady and wet places, whereas others grow submerged in water or even found climbing onto woody species.
