Abstract
In this chapter a discussion of the general aspects of Lie algebras is presented using only the familiar concepts of vector spaces, linear transformations and operators, matrices and commutators. Our treatment is brief in order to pro-vide only the necessary background for an understanding of the applications in later chapters. The relationship between a Lie algebra and its corresponding Lie group is discussed in Appendix B.
