Zusammenfassung

Neben den Krustenechsen, Heloderma, sind die Schlangen die einzigen Gifttiere dieser Klasse. Unter den etwa 3 300 Schlangenarten sind rund 500 giftige Spezies. Diese werden in fünf Familien unterteilt:

    Elapidae (Giftnattern, Kobras),

    Hydrophiidae (Seeschlangen),

  3. 3.

    Viperidae (Vipern),

  4. 4.

    Crotalidae (Klapperschlangen, Grubenottern),

  5. 5.

    Atractaspididae (Trugnattern).
