Abstract
More than two decades ago astronauts bound for the Moon looked back at our planet, seeing it suspended there all alone, swinging through the chill of outer space. For the first time we saw our home as a glistening blue and turquoise ball, light and round and shimmering like a bubble, flecked with delicate white clouds (Figs. 9.1 and 9.2). This perspective created a world-wide awareness of the Earth as a unique and vulnerable place, a tiny, fragile oasis in space.
