The Pharmacology of Sleep

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 116))

Abstract

Investigations on sleep have a long history. After the discovery of REM sleep (Aserinsky and Kleitmann 1953) interest in this phenomenon progressively increased. This interest was fostered when investigators noted that some CNS-active drugs changed the amount of REM sleep. An important group of such drugs is that of antidepressants. Subsequently the attention of many investigators has focused on this particular field. Studies testing the effects of antidepressants on sleep have been carried out in animals, normal humans, depressed patients and subjects suffering from other psychiatric disorders. The aims of these investigations have been heterogeneous and have included: evaluation of the effects of these drugs on sleep parameters; relationships between neurotransmitters and sleep regulation; drug classification based on their effects on sleep; and drug effects on sleep as indicators of treatment responsiveness.
