Abstract
Anxiety and the states of vigilance are closely interrelated. Thus, any anxious state, normal or pathologic, is associated with hyperarousal. Also, clinical experience shows that sleep disturbances are common among patients with diagnoseable anxiety disorders. For example, difficulties in falling and staying asleep are among the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (American Psychiatric Association 1994). Also, a considerable proportion of patients with panic disorder suffer from panic attacks during sleep and may secondarily develop a sleep disorder (Mellman and Uhde 1989). Further, insomnia and nightmares are among the main manifestations of post-traumatic stress disorder (American Psychiatric Association 1994). Finally, patients with obsessive compulsive disorder often present with sleep disturbances (Insel et al. 1982).
