Part of the book series: Springer Series on Atoms+Plasmas ((SSAOPP,volume 15))

Abstract

In this chapter the fundamentals of the general theory of electron collisions with atoms and ions are considered. The treatment begins with the simplest case of scattering in a central field. The quasi-classical (impact parameter) approximation for scattering phases η(p) and their connection with quantum phases ηλ are obtained. Formulas expressing the cross sections in terms of unitary S matrices are given.
