Abstract
Recent definitive observations imply a causal relationship between earthquakes separated by distances greater than a thousand kilometers. These include a dramatic episode of widespread seismicity following the 1992 Ms7.4 Landers, California earthquake [Hill et al,1993] and a striking correlation between large distant earthquakes and swarm activity at The Geysers geothermal field, California [Stark and Davis, 1995] (Fig. 1). This study seeks a better understanding of the physical mechanisms underlying these observations and more generally, how strain changes may initiate (trigger) rupture and increase seismicity.
