Abstract

Speech technology traditionally focuses on satisfying narrow vertical niches due to the incremental cost of adding necessary hardware. With faster processors and on-board audio, speech technology can now be added as software on to a wide range of platforms. Speech services should be designed to layer on top of the operating system, and the platform supporting these services should open to a variety of technologies. In addition, speech services must be integrated with other media to share resources for audio and telephony.
