Zusammenfassung
Die Arteriosklerose ist eine häufig vorkommende Krankheit mit potenziell schwerwiegenden Gesundheitsfolgen für den einzelnen Patienten. Die gesundheitsökonomische Bedeutung der Krankheit spiegelt sich in der altersabhängigen Prävalenz der Krankheit wider. Während die Prävalenz für Arteriosklerose bei Personen unter 60 Jahren 3% beträgt, liegt sie in der Altersgruppe der 75-Jährigen bereits bei 20% [15]. Die Häufigkeit der Krankheit macht somit eine exakte und gut verfügbare Diagnostik unabdingbar, umso mehr, als fortgeschrittene Krankheitsstadien der Arteriosklerose, insbesondere die periphere arterielle Verschlusskrankheit, heute effektiv mittels interventionell-radiologischen Methoden wie beispielsweise der perkutanen transluminalen Kathetertherapie oder durch Einlage von peripheren Gefäßstents behandelt werden können.
