Abstract

Van Driel’s fine paper is an important exploration of the circumstances surrounding the adoption of technical changes in the port of Rotterdam in which, having established a theoretical basis for innovation, he examines the details of mechanization there. These comments are not a criticism of his argument or facts, but rather a suggestion that the history of Rotterdam and Antwerp ports might be further illuminated by contextual and comparative study.
