Summary

The Indian national level institutions in consort with the specialized financial and state level institutions have been important channels in the movement of credit through various product and service offerings to the coprorate sector. With the financial sector reforms and the opening of a market based economy they face the strategic challenge of metamorphosing into universal banks. They have also to confront a newer regulatory environment, strike a new equation with multilateral and regional agencies and balance the changing magnitude and urgency of commercial and developmental priorities. The paper looks at the Indian experience with the reforms of the All India Development Banks, circumstances of their adjustment and their strategy and performance.
