Abstract

Recent theoretical research on the economic and technological development of European regions is widely based on the concept of the ‘industrial district’. Industrial districts are seen, on the one hand, as innovative units per se and, on the other, as relics of a pre-modern economic system, now out of date in a time of ‘footloose industries’ and a globalised world economy.
